GeoVoCamps: Taking Stock

It was Spring 2012 when Krzysztof Janowicz invited me to the first GeoVoCamp he was to hold at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I completely didn't know what to expect. But trusting Krzysztof's ingeniuity with running events of all sorts, come I did.

The event was focused on the modeling of Content Ontology Design Patterns for the GeoSciences. And at this event, while interacting with domain scientists in order to flesh out some patterns, something in my brain clicked. Suddenly, ontology modeling, ontology use, and ontology reuse started to make complete sense.

Since then, I've been involved. I've been at most of the events run in the same fashion in the U.S., and have co-organized some. And I continue to enojy - immensely - the interactive modeling sessions. In particular if they are on topics I know next to nothing about before the meeting.

Now, a good three years later, I wanted to take stock regarding tangible outcomes, in terms of papers, of these events. This is by no means a straightforward task, since the modeling sessions at the camps are merely the centerpiece of the work, but still a significant portion of the work happens offline, usually afterwards.

So the list below is most likely incomplete. Sometimes it is also not entirely clear whether a paper is the product of a camp, or is merely inspired by the type of work there. So I am including a second list of works from which I know that they have been strongly inspired, or even created using the same process, as at the camps.

I will happily extend the list below: If you know of additional papers which should go into these lists, just send them to me. And of course I'm also aware that there is quite a good amount of half-finished work from past camps, which may still be completed.
