Objectives

Semantic Web technologies are used in many diverse domains. Mainstream applications of Semantic Technologies now include Bioinformatics and healthcare with Smart cities an up and coming domain. Domains such as oceanography, astronomy, finance, and law utilize Semantic Technologies, but are generally under-represented in the broader Semantic Web community. This workshop aims at bridging this gap and leading to more widespread adoption of Semantic Web principles.

Topics of Interest

The primary aim of the workshop is to discuss non-regular, underrepresented and diverse topics related to the Semantic Web domain including work-in-progress, feasible ideas, failures and lessons learned. This covers a broad spectrum of topics across multiple disciplines. Some examples include, but are definitely not limited to the following.

1. Inter-disciplinary research (combination of Semantic Web technologies and other Science) in unconventional domains.
   • Experimental, non-traditional application of mathematics, machine learning, or information retrieval in Semantic Web context.
   • Semantic Web applications in non-regular fields such as astronomy, geosciences, music, law, finance etc.
2. Development of vocabulary and models in the context of Semantic Web for unconventional domains.
   • Quantitative measurements and statistical analysis of Semantic Web systems and models including Markov Chain models, UML etc.
   • Integration of probabilistic and ontological models for knowledge discovery
3. Position papers and research agendas for the injection of Semantic Web technologies in other domains (e.g. soft sciences and the liberal arts)

Program

Workshop is from 9:00am to 12:30pm on October 12, 2015. Paper presentations will be for 20 minutes with 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion.

Keynote

Title: Ontology modeling with domain experts

Speaker: Pascal Hitzler

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss lessons learned from several years' experience in modeling ontologies with domain experts. In particular, we will emphasize on quality aspects which make it easier to reuse ontologies and linked data published based on ontologies. We argue that modularization based on ontology design patterns improves quality control and at the same time simplifies information exchange between domain experts and ontology engineers.

Speaker Bio:

Pascal Hitzler is (full) Professor and Director of Data Science at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. From 2004 to 2009, he was Akademischer Rat at the Institute for Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, and from 2001 to 2004 he was postdoctoral researcher at the Artificial Intelligence institute at TU Dresden in Germany. In 2001 he obtained a PhD in Mathematics from the National University of Ireland, University College Cork, and in 1998 a Diplom (Master equivalent) in Mathematics from the University of Tübingen in Germany. His research record lists over 300 publications in such diverse areas as semantic web, neural-symbolic integration, knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, denotational semantics, and set-theoretic topology. He is Editor-in-chief of the Semantic Web journal by IOS Press, and of the IOS Press book series Studies on the Semantic Web. He is co-author of the W3C Recommendation OWL 2 Primer, and of the book Foundations of Semantic Web Technologies by CRC Press, 2010 which was named as one out of seven Outstanding Academic Titles 2010 in Information and Computer Science by the American Library Association's Choice Magazine, and has translations into German and Chinese. He is on the editorial board of several journals and book series and on the steering committee of the RR conference series and the NeSy workshop series, and he frequently acts as conference chair in various functions, including e.g. General Chair (RR2012), Program Chair (AIMSA2014, ODBASE2011, RR2010), Track Chair (AAAI-15, ESWC2015, ESWC2013, ESWC2011, ISWC2010), Workshop Chair (K-Cap2013), Sponsor Chair (ISWC2013, RR2009, ESWC2009). Invited Talk

Title: Towards event-based traceability in provenance-aware supply chains

Speaker: Monika Solanki

Abstract: The sharing of product information plays a central role in coordinating the actions and decisions undertaken by supply chain trading partners. The Electronic Product Code Information Service (EPCIS) is an EPCglobal standard, that aims to enable the sharing of serial-level product related information via the Electronic Product Code (EPC). Central to the EPCIS data model are "events" that describe specific occurrences in the supply chain. This talk will present a unified, provenance-aware framework, driven by Semantic Web standards and Linked data principles for representing and sharing EPCIS events on the Web of data. Event-based linked pedigrees are utilized as the basic artifact for exchanging knowledge. Traceability is implemented through the automated generation and validation of linked pedigrees. We exemplify our approach using the pharmaceuticals supply chain and show how counterfeit detection is an implicit part of our pedigree generation.

Submission Information

Contributions are solicited in the form of short papers (4-6 pages) and long papers (up to 12 pages) in LNCS format. All contributions should be prepared in PDF format and should be submitted through the workshop submission site at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=diversity2015.

Demos can be also be presented on the day of the workshop. Submitting a demo paper is not compulsory but encouraged (up to 4 pages).
